Typically gorgeous Rutter I love John Rutter’s music. Especially the “For the Beauty of the Earth” that is on this CD. Rutter is not the most inventive or varied composer of modern music, but if you have a taste for traditional choral writing with some angelic children’s chorus singing, then you will probably share my enjoyment of Rutter’s writing. Unfortunately I cannot give this CD 5 stars when it seems there is a drum set tapping annoyingly away on several of the songs. I do not understand this at all and am bothered by it every time I listen to those songs. It’s a shame, because otherwise I love the music, and think it is lushly written, and simply but beautifully performed. I would highly suggest listening to sample track 3 before purchasing — you can hear what sounds like a ride-cymbal right at the very end of the sample. This sound occurs in several of the songs on this recording.

Margaret F. Brown says:

Some of his best! This is a wonderful album and contains most of John’s best work. The Esurientes and What Sweeter Music are magnificent and anyone who loves John Rutter will love this collection. In his own words, music can be very “spiritual” for its beauty and he doesn’t disappoint with these choral pieces! It is a broad collection as well, and includes some favorite Christmas songs he has written and arranged.

22 Gems of Choral Beauty Rutter definitely is shining star of Christian choral composition, having for years now brought forth just an excellence of new and marvelous choral works, especially his liturgical and Christmas work. Thus, here is the “greatest” type collection of his works gathered here in one CD.Long a Rutter fan of both recordings and his music sung by our church choir and others, this man certainly has been blessed with significant composition skills and to use them for the Lord’s church is marvelous and blessing to us all.Favorites are: The Lord is my shepherd; Angels’ Carol; Shepherd’s pipe carol; Esurientes; Out of the Deep. How do you pick few out of 22? All are just outstanding in quality and depth of message, tenderness of performance. Here wonderfully performed by Cambridge Singers and City of London Sinfonia.
