Absolute waste of money I am an great Don Knotts fan and thought I’d try this. I assumed it would be part clips, part documentary. Do not waste your money. A few skits from his old variety show. Generally poor skits at that and some are of Joey Heatherton and Knotts isn’t even in the skit!. A five minute skit of Knotts singing with Jimmy Durante was worth watching as was a five minute nervous man skit. The other 50 minutes was so bad I fast forwarded through most. If you could get your money back on DVD’s you’ve watched, this would be headed back!

FAN OF THE GREAT STUFF says:

Fun & Rare Look At Don Knotts’ TV Comedy Outside of Sitcoms Any fan of the wonderful humor of Don Knotts should enjoy this collection of long-lost variety show footage from the 1960s and early 1970s — not seen for four decades! — and released here at a very reasonable price. (There’s also bonus footage of Knotts with Lucille Ball from the only time they ever worked together.)This material shows Knotts doing some hilarious stand-up comedy as well as comedy skits — plus musical skits and numbers. (Why another fan would complain about this is hard to understand — Knotts is entertaining and humorous in both formats and the incusion of guests such as the sexy Joey Heatherton gives further context to this notalgic footage and the era in which it was produced and originally aired — when comedy and music existed in regular showcases for great talents such as Carol Burnett, Dean Martin and others. This slice of Don Knotts’ TV work outside his “Andy Griffith Show” and “Three’s Company” sitcoms is an historical and hysterical DVD at a bargain.

Don Knotts hosts The HOLLYWOOD PALACE (1969) variety TV show. I don’t know why MPI Home Video is disguising just what this is, it is a 1969 episode of THE HOLLYWOOD PALACE. And there is only an HOUR of programming here! The misleading description by MPI makes you think it may be a collection of Don Knotts best clips from various TV shows, or maybe a documentary. IT IS NOT!Don Knotts hosts this episode of THE HOLLYWOOD PALACE with guest stars Joey Heatherton, Jimmy Durante and Jayne Powell. This means he does not appear in all skits, sometimes he just introduces the guests.Having fond memories of this variety show of the 1960′s, I was pleased to see that this is an episode of that rarely seen show.Is it the best performances of Don Knotts? Not really, but it IS fun to watch.Don’s best performance is actually in the BONUS clips, there is a great B&W clip from another undisclosed television show where Don comes out and performs his nervous Master of Ceremonies routine.I highly recommend watching this first! It is great prime Don Knotts.A second bonus clip is from Don’s appearance on HERE’S LUCY, which MPI uses to promote their DVDs of that show. The clip is fun but it would have been nice to include the entire half hour show as this DVD is only an hour long. You may be surprised at the openly gay jokes in this 1969 program. They are brief, but they are there. Casual by today’s standards, but they may have raised some eyebrows with the censors at the time.So why the mystery? Maybe to copyright a public domain show. The original Hollywood Palace end credits have been replaced with newly created credits calling the special “Tied Up With Laughter” and giving it a 2011 copyright notice to MPI Home Video.MPI also has this boxed set of HOLLYWOOD PALACE clips which also mysteriously fails to mention the the source show for the material (but you can see the name THE HOLLYWOOD PALACE on the sides of the curtain).
