Grumpy Land got its name for one very simple reason: Every citizen, man and woman, old and young, poor and rich, is grumpy. Even the King and Queen and their five children are great big grumps.
But that all changed with the birth of Prince Grumpy the Sixth. No one could explain the strange look on his face (it had been so long since anyone had seen a smile). Some thought he was ill; others chalked it up to a bad case of gas. Word of this mysterious child spread to all four corners of Grumpy Land, and before they realized it, the people were doing something they had never done before: smiling.
Barkingham Palace was a grumpy place until little Prince Grumpy the Sixth came on the scene! No one in Grumpy Land ever smiled. It wasn’t that they were unhappy, they just forgotten how to smile. King Grumpy sat on his throne in Barkingham Palace day after day and nary a smile passed his dog lips. Queen Grumpy was the same way. They ended up having five sons, all princes of course, but they didn’t smile either. They were “called Prince Grumpy the First, Second, Third, Fourth and Fifth.” It was just that way in Grumpy Land and no one took notice of the fact that these handsome dogs had such somber looks on their faces. Queen Grumpy gave birth to a sixth son, Grumpy the Sixth, but something was drastically wrong with him!He was a handsome dog prince, but when the king looked at him he got upset and cried out that there was “something wrong with him!” because he looked positively ill (pssst, there was a smile on his face). Princes are important in the kingdom so doctors from all over the land came to see and examine him. They were afraid that Grumpy the Sixth might be contagious. “It must be gas!” was the only explanation they could come up with to the king and queen. They dosed him with cod liver oil, but he still looked abnormal. Then one day in Parliament a “most horrid look spread across” the king’s face. Oh, no . . . was he coming down with this strange malady as well?This is an adorable story and right from the first illustration on the cover it is easy to see what a difference a smile can make, especially in a place like Grumpy Land where no one can even manage to turn up the corners of their mouths just a little. This would be a wonderful circle time read aloud and discussion book in a classroom. The art work is bold and saucy and adds a lot to this work. There are a lot of grumpy people in the world aren’t there, but a smile is contagious, isn’t it?
