Maria Parloa (1843–1909), American culinary author, authentic, autographed vintage handwritten quotation (AQS), 7.75 x 5. Considered America’s first ”celebrity cook,” Parloa pioneered the fields of domestic science. In addition to writing books and lecturing on the art of cooking and housekeeping, she founded two namesake schools: Miss Parloa’s School of Cooking first opened its doors on Tremont Street in Boston in 1877. By 1882, Parloa closed its doors and relocated to New York, reopening her school with much greater success. She made several educational trips to Europe, immersing herself in various culinary and domestic studies, all of which would find their way into her groundbreaking cooking guides.
Extracted from the pages of a 1902 Autograph Calendar book recovered from Orange Memorial Hospital, New Jersey, Parloa added the following quote to a page with the printed date of March 16: “One of the secrets of happiness lies in occupation. Select some work and do it consciously and well. Maria Parloa.”
In fine condition, with overall light toning and a rough left edge from extraction.
