Land and Sea Series, by Elena Lyakir The Land and Sea series has an obvious intention: Beauty. Awe. Calm. Healing. Inspiration. Awareness. As well as openness of the thought process in the vastness of landscape. Overtime landscapes can become infused with history, yet still images provide a continuous revelation of their beauty, often evoking sentiments of nostalgia. In this way, Land and Sea is a meditation on the quest for purity and true essence. At the same time, the images are not “pure” in the documentary sense, but rather painterly abstractions that encourage an altered sense of reality in the viewer. While photographing landscapes and seascapes I sometimes use a slow shutter speed technique – an effort to capture time while passing. Consequently time becomes illimitable. The audience is constantly reminded of time’s continuous emergence and departure. The Land and Sea series is also contemplation on the idea that a captured image in photography is literally a moment lost in time, in the past… yet it lives on.
