When Debra Price, an arts executive from California, accepts a job on the Gulf Coast of Florida she finds herself an outsider in the rural, tropical setting and a victim of a conspiracy. Hired to develop a cultural park, she unknowingly upsets a good ol’ boy network of drug smuggling and a land scam. The men have secret plans for the park. The more successful Debra is, the more she encounters their resistance which soon escalates into violence. Innocent people are killed, and the tropical serenity of the Gulf Coast explodes into a battle between retirees, land developers, old Floridian families and state politicians. Debra learns that, like the smiles on alligators, charming Southern manners can hide dangerous thoughts. She also learns about love and personal bravery as she takes a stand that risks her life and exposes corruption that reaches Tallahassee, the state capital.

Patrick Gallagher says:

An Exceptional Read I really enjoyed this book. It is well plotted, the heroine is someone I cared about, the bad folks are believable. Additional treats of the book are evocative descriptions of the history, culture, landscape, and fauna of the Florida coast.

Finely crafted I think you’ll find yourself engrossed by the plot and admire the clear command of words. I felt transported to this overlooked tropical area of Florida.

Move over, Carl Hiaasen! In Alligator Smiles, Blythe Rainey-Cuyler becomes the newest mystery writer to set a plot of murder, deception, corruption, sex, and vindication on a background of Florida’s tropical Gulf Coast. Replete with unscrupulous land developers and good ol’ boys in league to bring about her downfall, Alligator Smiles’ main character draws upon the author’s wide experience in the performing arts to provide a convincing tale in which the mosquitoes and swamps, heat, humidity, exotic flora and fauna create an atmosphere perfect for mayhem and seduction. A real page turner (or page forwarder on your Kindle)!
