Nice Compilation Covering An Obscure But Talented R&B Artist If you’re searching for talented but obscure R&B artists, look no further than this offering from the Seattle-based Light In The Attic Records. Very little is known about Wendy René other than the fact she was born Mary Lou Frierson in Memphis, probably around 1949, and that, around the age of 15, she was part of a group calling themselves The Drapels. This included brother Johnnie Frierson, Wilbur Mondie and Marion Brittenum.With virtually no singing experience – other than Johnnie who had dabbled in some gospel in and around Mamphis – they somehow got a recording contract from Stax Records and in 1964 cut, for the Volt subsidiary, Wondering When My Love Is Coming/Please Don’t Leave Me (Volt 114) and Young Man/Your Love Is All I Need (Volt 119). Neither made any imapct on any of the national charts.When it became clear that the real talent was Mary, it was decided, before she went solo, that she needed a stage name with a bit more pizzazz, and after considering a number of choices, including Wendy Storm, Stax star and legendary Otis Redding suggested Wendy René. Her initial release, although never making the national charts, is regarded as her best and now After Laughter (Comes Tears) is regarded as a classic of its type. Released in 1964 on Stax 154 the flip was She’s Moving Away (tracks 4 and 14). Later that year Stax released Bar B Q/Young And Foolish (Stax 159), and in early 1965 followed with Reap What You Sow/Give You What I Got on Stax 171. To no avail.Wendy’s real brush with fate came on December 10, 1967 when she was slated to take the same airplane as Otis Redding and The Bar-Kays for a scheduled live performance, but now with a young family (she had married Stax executive James Cross), and with no hits to her credit, changed her mind. In poor weather, the plane went down near Madison, Wisconsin, instantly killing all on board.This compendium of her output offers up all the sides mentioned above along with other cuts in excellent sound and with informative notes, including an interview with Wendy. Just one more example among many of a talented artist who deserved better in terms of commercial success.
