The recounting of the lack of love she was given as a child and the child abuse she received instead is heartbreaking to read, but hers is a true life adventure in how she was able to rise above that to become a professional Disney animator who worked with Don Bluth, Ollie Johnston, and after that for Warner Brothers. She was a child of the 50s, born to a show business father. Although she grew up in Beverly Hills, California, where you would think life would be rosy, her home life stood in sharp contrast to the idyllic life shown on TV shows of that era, such as “Leave It To Beaver” and “Father Knows Best.” In fact, her father produced Art Linkletter’s “House Party” and Heidi grew up surrounded with TV and movie stars throughout her young life. I found myself unable to stop reading the book, as it detailed her rebellion at the way she was being treated.

Laughter and the Overcoming Spirit I was literally “hooked” in the first few pages of this book. The content is compelling, inspiring, and emotionally deep. This future Disney Animator began her life as an emotionally deprived, rejected, and abused child… but she rose above it with an irrepressible sense of humor, and a talent that would not be denied. Her excellent descriptions of the people in her life are neither bitter nor maudlin… and often quite funny. In fact, she demonstrates a level of comprehension and compassion for others that is extremely refreshing in a “tell-all” memoir. The inside info on what it was like to work at Disney Studios is fascinating and hilarious. I am anxious to read the sequel.
